What We Do

How We Work

During their time in pre-school children learn important social skills like taking turns and sharing. They begin to learn how to count and how to begin to form letters and their ability to understand and speak English is developed. What the children think they are doing is playing, but there’s a lot more to it than that.

All activities are carefully thought out so that children will enjoy themselves and learn at the same time.

Little Stars Pre-school has:

Curriculum

Our approach to play and learning is based on the Early Years foundation stage. The Early Years Stage Curriculum will be delivered through a range of themes. Planning within these will be based on the following 7 areas of learning, helping each child grow in positive self-esteem and self-understanding through enjoyable effective social relations. We help each child grow in understanding knowledge and appreciation of the work in which he/she lives. We also enable each child to achieve success, gain confidence and acquire the skills necessary for nursery and school.

These are our three prime areas:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of learning is about emotional wellbeing, knowing who you are and where you fit in and feeling good about yourself. It is about developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition to learn.

Communication, Language and Literacy

All children will be given opportunities to talk and communicate in a widening range of situations, to respond to adults and to each other, to practise and extend the range of vocabulary and communications skills they use and to listen carefully.

Physical Development

There will be opportunities for all children to develop and practise their fine and gross motor skills and to increase their understanding of how their bodies work and what they need to do to be healthy and safe.

These are our three specific areas:

Literacy

All children will be encouraged to link sounds and letters and to begin early letters. Mathematics development There will be opportunities for all children to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space by providing a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about them.

Understanding the World

All children will be given opportunities to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question in a variety of contexts. They will explore and find out about their environment and the people and places that have significance in their lives.

Expressive Arts and Design

All children will be opportunities to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, design technology, music, movement, dance and imaginative role-play activities.

Key Person Approach

Our setting uses a key person approach. This means that each member of staff has a group of children for whom she/he is particularly responsible.

Your child’s key person will be the person who works with you to make sure that the childcare that we provide is right for your child’s particular needs and interests. When your child first starts at the setting, she/he will help your child to settle and throughout your child’s time at the setting, she/he will help your child to benefit from our activities.

If you have any concerns about your child or questions, you are always welcome to speak to Wahida Chowdhury or Atiya Khan you can make an appointment at any time to meet with them when they are not with the children or give them a ring.

Learning Journey

Each child will be given a folder which we will update regularly with photographs and observations that we make about your child. We will suggest next steps for your child which will help their learning to progress even further.

You will be able to look at your child’s folder on a regular basis and feel free to add photos or comments of things that you notice your child doing at home. Your child will be able to look through their own folder and say what they like about it. Your child’s key person will be responsible for updating your child’s record of achievement.

Special Needs

As part of the setting’s policy to make sure that its provision meets the needs of each individual child, we take account of any special needs a child may have and put in place any additional Support they may need. The setting works to the requirements of the 1993 Education Act and The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice (2001).

Our inclusion officer works closely with Luton Borough SEN advisory team to ensure we meet the needs of any child with additional needs that may join our setting.

Safeguarding Children

Our setting has a duty under the law to help safeguard children against suspected or actual ‘significant harm’. Our employment practices ensure children against the likelihood of abuse in our setting and we have a procedure for managing complaints or allegations against a member of staff.

Our way of working with children and their parents ensures that we are aware of any problems that may emerge and can offer support, including referral to appropriate agencies when necessary, to help families in difficulty.
